Thinking. Help for Afghanistan
Mum gave me a book for Christmas which I finally finished, in tears, of course. It's the story of an Afghan refugee who escaped from her country when the Russians invaded. At the time she was in danger of being arrested (and probably killed) for protesting against the invaders.
She moved to Australia in the early 1980s, but then began to raise money for other Afghan refugees, most of whom were living in squalor and poverty in Pakistan. This is the time that I was in Pakistan, and I knew some people who were working with the Afghan community, but of course, never enough could be done.
Mahboba's fundraising efforts grew and now her organisation Mahboba's promise does a huge work supporting orphans and widows, running orphanages and building schools.
