Book Club questions for Invisible by Cecily Anne Paterson

Someone wrote and asked me for some questions her book club could use when discussing Invisible. Here they are.

1. Invisible is written by an Australian author and set in Australia. If you're not an Aussie, what do you notice that is particularly Australian about the book, in the language, story or setting?

2. The classic children's novel The Secret Garden is used extensively as a central theme in Invisible. From what you know of it, are the two stories similar in any way? What do you think about the interplay between the two books?

3. Is it reasonable that Jazmine doesn't tell anyone - not even her mother - how she feels? 

4. What is the role of the Miss Fraser character? Is she believable or not? Did you ever have a mentor or role model like her?

5. If you had to sum up the message of Invisible in one sentence, what would it be?

6. Jazmine is 13 years old. If you didn't know her age, how old would you guess her to be? Can you remember what you were thinking at age 13?

7. Jazmine is partially deaf. What devices has the author used to make this more believable and obvious?

8. What is the role of the sky and the ground in the growth of Jazmine?

9. Finally: the most important question: vanilla or chocolate?
